Biography

Sylvia M. Oiness was born in Minnesota. She received her Bachelor of Arts from Wheaton College in 1935, and her nursing diploma from Johns Hopkins Hospital School of Nursing in 1938. She held staff nursing positions at Johns Hopkins Hospital from 1938 to 1946. In 1941 she survived the sinking of the ship ZamZam. From 1946 on she was an active missionary nurse in Swaziland.

Scope and Content

The Sylvia M. Oiness Collection consists of her memoir “Strange Fate of the ZamZam: the Miracle Ship.”
