Biography

Mary Elizabeth Browne was born in Maryland. She received her nursing diploma in 1901. Following graduation she served as head nurse at the Johns Hopkins Hospital. From 1901 to 1910 she held a variety of positions, including as a privtate duty nurse, nurse with the Instructive Visiting Nurses Association, nurse at Mercy Hospital and East End Hospital in Pittsburgh, and at the Thomas Wilson Sanatorium for Babies. From 1910 to 1933, she held the position of charge nurse of the Goucher College Infirmary. She was a life member of the Johns Hopkins Nurses Alumnae Association.

The Mary Elizabeth Browne Collection consists of her nursing diploma and Maryland State Nurses’ certificate.
