Louis Eugene Livingood Collection

Biography

Louis Eugene Livingood was born in Reading, Pennsylvania. He received his A.B. from Princeton University in 1890, and after teaching there for two years entered the University of Pennsylvania, where he received his M.D. in 1895. He received a fellowship in pathology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine for the 1895-1896 academic year and was appointed assistant in pathology in 1896. He drowned at sea in 1898 when the French steamship LaBourgogne, on which he was a passenger, sank after a collision in the North Atlantic Ocean.

The Louis Eugene Livingood Collection spans his years as a medical student and fellow in medicine. It includes notebooks, reprints, autopsy notes, laboratory notes, illustrations, and cell photographs. The notebooks are from classes and clinics that Livingood attended while a student and fellow at the school of medicine. The collection also includes an extensive amount of news coverage and personal material relating to the sinking of the LaBourgogne and Livingood’s death.
