Lay Martin Collection

Biography

Lay Martin was born in Baltimore. He received his B.S. from Princeton University in 1915 his M.D. from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1920. Martin published more than 40 papers in a period of 30 years of teaching, research, and private practice. One of his major interests was Latin America and its peoples. Martin traveled widely there, and in 1942 he was sent by Nelson Rockefeller, coordinator of inter-American affairs, on a tour of eleven Latin American countries to study their wartime medical problems. He received several honors from Latin American countries, including Cuba’s highest medical honor, the Order of Finlay.

Scope and Content

The Lay Martin Collection spans his entire medical career. It contains news clippings, ephemera, and reprints. The bulk of the material pertains to Martin’s interests in Latin America.
