Henry J. Gaffney Collection

Biography

Henry J. (Hank) Gaffney was born in Utica, New York, and did his undergraduate work at Cornell University and the University of Baltimore. Gaffney started his professional career as a plant engineer for Bendix Aviation. Later he supervised mechanical operations for the McLean Contracting company. He came to Johns Hopkins in 1950 on assignment from the Edmunds architectural firm to work on reconstruction projects at the medical complex. In 1956, Gaffney was appointed staff engineer to the Medical Planning and Development Committee of the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions and was subsequently promoted to Plant Manager. After his official retirement in 1978, he continued to advise the Johns Hopkins administration as a consultant, offering advice on plant construction and management issues.

Scope and Content

The Henry J. Gaffney Collection contains professional correspondence, architectural and building manuals, reprints, and other publications pertaining to the operation of the Facilities Management Office (formerly Plant Management) at the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions. A number of architectural drawings and blueprints are also included.
