Edward Lindon Mellus Collection

Biography

Edward Lindon Mellus was born in Lubec, Maine. He received his M.D. in 1878 from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia. While in Europe recovering from an illness, he became interested in the scientific study of the structure and functions of the nervous system. When he returned to America, Mellus settled in Baltimore, where he continued his scientific work at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He was given an honorary position in the anatomical laboratory as a fellow in 1898 and maintained his association with Johns Hopkins until 1912.

Scope and Content

The Edward Lindon Mellus Collection consists of biographical material, correspondence, clippings, and reprints. The bulk of the collection comprises correspondence and clippings (1913-1914) concerning a controversial paper Mellus presented in 1913. His research concluded that there was no relation between brain efficiency and the size, weight, or outward appearance of the brain.
