Biography

Carolyn P. Bedell was born in Orange, New Jersey. She received her nursing diploma from Johns Hopkins Hospital and her Bachelors of Science in Nursing in 1959 from McCoy College of Johns Hopkins University. She received a New York State scholarship to pursue her M.A. from Columbia University Teachers College which she completed in 1963. In 1960 she worked at the Columbia Babies Hospital in New York, and the following year became an instructor there in pediatric nursing. While pursuing her career and education in New York, she was employed as a staff nurse at Johns Hopkins Hospital. In 1966 she worked as a nurse with Project Hope, educating nurses and treating patients in Nicaragua. She worked as a public health nurse in California and held several teaching positions throughout the country. She maintained memberships in many associations, including the Council of Community Health Nursing and American Public Health Association.
