Creator: Trudeau, Francis Berger (1886-1956) Collection Date: 1885-1913 Extent: 2 linear feet
Francis B. Trudeau was born in Saranac Lake, New York. He received his A.B. from Yale in 1909 and his M.D. from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1913. After serving with the U.S. Army Medical Corps in World War I, Trudeau returned to Saranac Lake to set up a medical practice. He was known for his studies of tuberculosis and for his work at the sanitorium founded by his father, Edward Livingston Trudeau, in Saranac Lake.
The Francis B. Trudeau Collection consists of an account book (1885-1889) of the family finances of James Carey Thomas, M.D. (trustee of the Johns Hopkins University) and correspondence between the Trudeau and the Thomas families. The account book shows family expenses and income primarily from the medical practice of James Carey Thomas and also contains material related to Mary Whittal, the wife of James Carey Thomas. The correspondence collection was severely damaged by insect infestation prior to receipt. Some of the correspondence appears to be from M. Carey Thomas, who played a key role in raising the funds neccessary for the opening of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and was later president of Bryn Mawr College.
