William F. Rienhoff, Jr., Collection

Biography

William F. Rienhoff was born in Springfield, Missouri. He received his A.B. in 1915 from Cornell University and his M.D. in 1919 from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He interned in both medicine and surgery at the Johns Hopkins Hospital under William S. Halsted and J.M.T. Finney, then accepted joint appointments at the Johns Hopkins Hospital and School of Medicine. During the 1920s and 1930s, Rienhoff focused his research on the study of the thyroid gland, using innovative techniques to gain a better understanding of its anatomy. Later he concentrated on lung surgery, specializing in carcinoma of the lung. Rienhoff was one of the first researchers to link environmental factors with lung cancer.

Scope and Content

The William F. Rienhoff, Jr., Collection includes a typed manuscript entitled Historical Memories of The Johns Hopkins Hospital and The Johns Hopkins Medical School 1915-1960; a copy of the Publications of W.F. Rienhoff, Jr., Volumes II and III, 1933-1956; and one letter from William H. Welch.
