Biography

Lee H. Riley, Jr., was born in St. Louis, Missouri. He received his B.A. and M.D. from the University of Oklahoma. Riley finished his medical training specializing in orthopedic surgery at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1959. Beginning as an instructor in orthopedic surgery in 1963, Riley was one of the pioneers in the design and development of the first practical artificial knee joint. He was also one of the first surgeons to perform total hip arthroplasty. He became the Robert A. Robinson Professor of Orthopedic Surgery in 1979 and a Distinguished Service Professor in 1991.

The Lee H. Riley, Jr., Collection contains biomedical images and slides compiled during his surgical career at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
