Fred W. Phillips was born near Ironton, Ohio, and received an A.B. from Ohio University in 1925. After teaching high school for two years, he was accepted into the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and graduated in 1931. He served an internship in gynecology and completed his training in South Dakota and Detroit, Michigan. He entered private practice in Zanesville, Ohio and retired in 1973.
The Fred W. Phillips Collection contains student lecture notes and other papers related to his years at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine from 1927 to 1932. The primary focus of the collection is the lecture notes that range from anatomy to R.O.T.C. training. There are also photographs of Johns Hopkins residents who trained under Phillips in his Zanesville, Ohio office during the 1950s, as well as a short autobiography written in 1981.
