Biography

Ruth Jeffcoat Nelson was born in Whitmire, South Carolina. She received her Bachelor of Arts from Lander College in 1934 and her nursing diploma in 1937 from Johns Hopkins Hospital School of Nursing. She was a staff nurse at Johns Hopkins Hospital from 1938 to 1941 and briefly served as head nurse of the outpatient department in 1945. From 1941 to 1943 she worked with the American Red Cross Blood Donor project. She held the position of instructor with the Red Cross Home Nursing Service from 1943 to 1945. In 1939, she married Russel A. Nelson, who was President of the Johns Hopkins Hospital from 1952 to 1972.
