Lyda K. King Collection

Biography

Lyda K. King was born in Homer, Louisiana in 1881. She came to Johns Hopkins Hospital Training School for Nurses as a widow, her husband, Joseph J. King having died in 1910. She was a member of the graduating class of 1913 and after graduation, she served with the Johns Hopkins Hospital Unit 18 in France during World War I. For her service, she received a French Medal of Honor. In 1920 she received her degree in social service work from Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. She was the director of the Junior League Children’s Clinic in San Antonio, Texas. She also held the positions of Nursing Supervisor in the American Red Cross for New Hampshire, Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas.

Scope and Content

The Lyda K. King Collection consists of scrapbook items pertaining to her trip abroad during World War I and service at Base Hospital Unit 18. Included are photographs, newspaper clippings and her French Medal of Honor.
