John F. Kantner Collection

Biography

John F. Kantner was born in Somerset, Pennsylvania. He received his A.B. in 1942 from Franklin and Marshall College and his M.A. in 1947 and Ph.D. in 1953, both from the University of Michigan. Kantner first served as an assistant professor of sociology at the College of William and Mary, then held academic appointments at the University of California, Panjab University of Pakistan, and the University of Western Ontario. In 1968, he came to the Johns Hopkins University School of Hygiene and Public Health as professor of population dynamics, eventually holding the office of chairman from 1976-1985. Kantner conducted studies on teen pregnancy and contraception.

The John F. Kantner Collection spans his years in the department of population dynamics. It consists of administrative records, correspondence, and files from Kantner’s research in the U.S. and abroad. Research topics include family planning, demographics, fertility studies, and rural social change. Prominent countries in the studies include Indonesia, Bangladesh, India, and Pakistan.
