Biography

Margaret Forsythe Hammar was born in 1886 in Baltimore. She was a member of the Johns Hopkins Hospital Training School for Nurses class of 1916. Upon graduation, she served as a head nurse and later nurse in charge of the Harriet Lane Home at the Johns Hopkins Hospital She also held positions in the Babies Milk Fund and Maryland Bureau of Child Hygiene. From 1925 to 1933 she was in charge of the Pediatrics Department at the Delaware Hospital. She then served as Superintendent of Nurses at the Children’s Hospital at the State Tuberculosis (Brandywine) Sanatorium in Delaware. She retired from active nursing in 1945. Her specialty was pediatric nursing. Her sister, Mary Alice Hammar received her nursing diploma from Church Home and Infirmary Training School for Nurses in 1905.

The Margaret Forsythe Hammar Collection consists of her diploma, Maryland State Nursing certificate, correspondence, and nursing pins.
