Joseph K. Hoffman was the Chief “laboratorian” or janitor in the Pathological Laboratory during the years that William Welch was the director of the Department of Pathology. In a April 12, 1927 letter to Welch, Hoffman, refers to his nearly 32 years “spent in your service” and inquires, “I am looking forward with the hope that you will be able to find a place for me in the new library so that I may again enter your service.” Welch thanked Hoffman for the gift and stated, “Your two scrapbooks with suitable acknowledgements of you as the compiler will be deposited in our new library.”
The Joseph K. Hoffman consists of two scrapbooks which were presented to William Welch on Welch’s birthdays in 1924 and 1927. The scrapbooks consists of clippings, photographs and cartoons. An additional scrapbook can be found in the Welch papers (Box 187). The scrapbooks contain clippings primarily related to the Johns Hopkins University and the Johns Hopkins Hospital, but also include science topics.
