Ernest S. Hendry Collection

Biography

Ernest S. Hendry was born in Baltimore and graduated from the Johns Hopkins University with an A.B. in 1907 and an M.D. from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1911. After completing his residency at Union Protestant Infirmary in Baltimore, Hendry entered private practice in Washington, D.C., specializing in gastroenterology. He became very interested in the relationship between the whole body and infections found around the teeth and sinuses. In 1973, Hendry gave a grant to the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine’s divisions of dentistry and otolaryngology to study the effect of oral and nasal infections on patients with systemic diseases such as arthritis, nephritis and vascular headaches. Eugene Lyon and Donald Tilghman were the principle investigators of the study.

Scope and Content

The Ernest S. Hendry Collection contains class notes and lab books written during his years as an undergraduate and a medical student at the Johns Hopkins University from 1904 to 1911. Notebooks include rules of grammar, notes on literature and history, as well as lecture notes from Welch, Abel, Sabin, Halsted, Futcher and Finney.
