Carroll D. Hill Collection

Biography

Carroll D. Hill was born in Baltimore and graduated from Baltimore City College. He was the assistant to the treasurer and comptroller of Johns Hopkins Hospital for six years. In 1942, he joined Johns Hopkins Base Hospital 18 and served as their adjutant and personnel officer in New Zealand and the Fiji Islands. In June, 1944, he returned to the United States as the administrator of the military hospital at Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Maryland. Hill entered Columbia University’s new hospital administration program in 1945. He was named director of Union Memorial Hospital in May, 1946 and remained in that position until 1958. At his death, Hill was an administrator at the Children’s Hospital in Washington, D.C. He was a member of Maryland Hospital Service and Maryland Medical Service, serving on its board of directors. He also served a term as president of the Maryland-District of Columbia-Delaware Hospitals Association.

Scope and Content

The Carroll D. Hill Collection consists of correspondence and memorabilia of his World War II experience with Johns Hopkins Base Hospital 18. His account of his travels to New Zealand and the Fiji Islands with photographs are of particular interest as well as news articles chronicalling the Base Hospital 18 unit.
