Biography

Leslia N. Gay was born in Shamokin, Pennsylvania. He received his Ph.B. in 1913 from Lafayette College and an M.D. in 1917 from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He founded the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine’s allergy clinic, and was its director for 36 years. He pioneered the use of the drug Dramamine, which he and an associate discovered could serve as both a preventative medicine and a cure for motion sickness. Gay also helped establish an allergy clinic in Cardiff, Wales, and was a consultant for the Walter Reed Army Medical Center for many years.

Scope and Content

The Leslie N. Gay Collection covers his years as director of the Johns Hopkins allergy clinic. Series include correspondence, scientific manuscripts, speeches made by Gay and colleagues, scientific illustrations, research data, slides, and reprints. The majority of the correspondence, manuscripts, and speeches concern motion sickness and use of the drug Dramamine.
