Joanne Batzinger Frank Collection

Biography

Joanne Batzinger Frank was born in Schenectady, New York in 1947. She graduated from Guilderland Central High School in New York in 1965. She attended the Johns Hopkins Hospital School of Nursing from 1965 to 1968 and received her nursing diploma. She practiced intensive care nursing at Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital, Massachusetts General Hospital, and Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City until 1970. She obtained her BA BS in Mathematics from City College of the University of New York in 1978, and her MS in Operations Research from Columbia University School of Engineering. She was a member of technical staff at Bell Laboratories from 1978 to 1983. In 1983 she began working as a systems analyst and industrial engineer at the University Hospital of the University of Kentucky and at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Lexington, KY.

Scope and Content

The Joanne Batzinger Frank Collection consists of a series of letters from Joanne to her family during her time as a student nurse at the Johns Hopkins Hospital School of Nursing. The letters describe life in Hampton House and as a student nurse. Additionally, the letters contain a detailed account of her view of the Baltimore race riot of April 1968 which occurred following the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. as well as a description of its effect on the communities she was supposed to visit as a public health nurse. The collection is a resource for studying life as a student nurse at Johns Hopkins during the 1960s as well as examining a unique perspective on the Baltimore race riots.
