Biography

Harry Friedenwald was born in Baltimore, Maryland. He received an A.B. from the Johns Hopkins University in 1884 and his M.D. from the College of Physicians and Surgeons, Baltimore, Maryland in 1886. Friedenwald pursued post-graduate study in Austria and with Dr. Julius Hirschberg in Berlin from 1887-1889. Returning to Baltimore, he established an ophthalmology practice and became an associate professor of ophthalmology and otolagy at the College of Physicians and Surgeons. He retired in 1929 as professor emeritus from the University of Maryland Medical School. The medical school awarded him an honorary degree in science in 1932.

Scope and Content

The Harry Friedenwald collection consists of correspondence with Howard Kelly and William Welch. The majority of the correspondence involves exchanges of courtesy, but a few letters cover the topics of medical history and rare medical textbooks.
