Charlotte Ferencz Collection

Biography

Charlotte Ferencz was born in Budapest, Hungary. She received her B.S. in 1944 and her M.D. in 1945, both from McGill University. After serving as a fellow in pediatrics at the Johns Hopkins Hospital from 1949 to 1951, she received her diploma in pediatrics from McGill University. Ferencz joined the faculty of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in pediatric cardiology in 1954, serving as director of the rheumatic fever clinic until 1958. In 1970, she received her M.P.H. from the Johns Hopkins University School of Hygiene and Public Health. In 1973, she joined the faculty of the University of Maryland in the departments of epidemiology, preventive medicine, and pediatrics. Starting in the 1980s, she was principal investigator for the comprehensive Baltimore-Washington Infant Study, a population based etiologic study of congenital heart disease.
