Daphine Doster Collection

Biography

Daphine Doster was born in Monroe, North Carolina in 1906. She graduated with a B.S. in music from the North Carolina College for Women in 1927 and was a member of the Johns Hopkins Hospital School of Nursing graduating class of 1936. From 1937 to 1940 she was Surgical Supervisor at Berea College Hospital in Kentucky. During World War II she served in the Johns Hopkins Base Hospital Unit 18 in Fiji and India in the Pacific theatre. She received her Masters in Public Health from the University of Minnesota in 1947. From 1947 to 1949 she was the Educational Director for Public Health Nursing for the Arkansas State Health Department. In 1951 she was appointed the first acting Dean of the School of Nursing at the University of Arkansas and remained in that position until 1972. She married Joseph Mastroianni in 1992.

Scope and Content

The Daphine Doster Collection documents her experiences in World War II and includes student photographs, her nursing diploma and a taped oral history interview.
