Biography

Donna Cousens Conley was born in Portland, Maine. She received her nursing diploma from the Johns Hopkins Hospital School of Nursing in 1961. She received a BSN in 1990. Conley retired in 1999 after 39 years of bedside nursing. She was active in the Academy of Medical Surgical Nurses and served on its board for four years in the 1990’s. In 2000 Conley received the Writer of the Year award from the MEDSURG Nursing Journal.

Scope and Content

The Donna Cousens Conley Collection consists of Johns Hopkins Hospital School of Nursing memorabilia from her nursing school career (1958-1961) and many photos. Additionally there are books and pamphlets including “A Way of Life” by William Osler, 1937 inscribed to her by her sister. Artifacts include stethoscope in original box, a first aid/ Medical kit, a variety of vintage pills, plasters and bottles, thermometers, and a small blue disposable plastic eye wash basin. Of special interest is a book of Lawrence Emge prints of Johns Hopkins Hospital buildings coupled with 1960 era photos of the same scenes.
