Mildred E. Barnard Collection

Biography

Mildred E. Barnard was born in Albany, New York. She earned a B.A. from the New York State College for Teachers in 1946. She received a nursing diploma from the Johns Hopkins Hospital School of Nursing in 1950 as well as a B.S. from the Johns Hopkins University (McCoy College) the same year. At graduation she was awarded the Emma Jones Beckwith Cullen Prize. She also earned a M.A. in nursing education from New York University in 1959. Barnard started her nursing career at the Johns Hopkins Hospital’s Women’s Clinic (1950-1953). She returned to New York to work with the Carmelite nuns. In 1967 she became the nursing director of the Tompkins County Health Department and in 1981 moved to Binghamton, New York to assist in the development of the Twin Tier Home Healthcare group. Barnard retired in 1986.

Scope and Content

The Mildred E. Barnard Collection consists of correspondence, memorabilia, photos and artifacts. A small blue spiral bound photo album is of particular interest. The first page has a small photo of the hospital, the next a photo of Anna Wolf; also included are photos of faculty member Cynthia Mallory and of Barnard and her classmates. Many pages are signed by the students, including classmate Betty Scher. Correspondence includes letters about awards and Barnard’s gifts to the school; diplomas; her 1972 article in Modern Nursing Home, “Here’s How to Plan for Discharge of Patients”, and 1950 class lists. The artifacts include: a paperweight for the Nursing Legacy Circle; a 50th JHH anniversary alumna medal; pins (JHU pin, and American Red Cross pin, and a turtle pin which was/is attached to front page of photo album); and a JHU Seiko expandable wristwatch.
