Caroline Benoist Collection

Biography

Caroline Benoist was born in Natchez, Mississippi in 1896. Upon graduation from the Johns Hopkins Training School for Nurses graduating in 1925, she served for a year as a head nurse at the Johns Hopkins Hospital. In 1927, she returned to the hospital as a head nurse and nurse in charge of the operating room at the Wilmer Eye Institute. From 1928 to 1930 she did summer relief work in the General Operating Room. From 1933 to 1934 she served as head nurse on the Thayer floor of the Johns Hopkins Hospital. In 1937 she received a Commonwealth Scholarship to complete post-graduate work in Public Health nursing at Vanderbilt University. Later, she studied home-delivery service at the University of Chicago Lying-In Hospital. She returned to Natchez to work as a public health nurse and home nurse.

Scope and Content

The Caroline Benoist Collection covers her student years, early professional life, and involvement in the Alumni Association. The collection consists of uniforms and artifacts, diary, student notes, newspaper clippings, photographs, and correspondence. Particular strengths include science and nursing education at the Johns Hopkins Hospital Training School for Nursing in the 1920s and early discussions about public health education.
