Arlene M. Butz graduated with a BSN from Penn State University in 1973 and began her clinical nursing career as a staff nurse in the adolescent unit at the Johns Hopkins Hospital Children’s Center. After receiving a MSN/PNP from Catholic University in 1978, Butz became an instructor in the pediatric primary care program at the University of Maryland and was a clinically active pediatric nurse practitioner. Butz received a Sc.D from the Johns Hopkins University School of Hygiene and Public Health in 1987 and was appointed as a post-doctoral nursing fellow in the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing. Joining the nursing faculty as assistant professor in 1989, she focused on curriculum development and nursing care of HIV/AIDS patients. In 1996, Butz joined the faculty of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Department of Pediatrics, HIV Service where she could combine her clinical and research interests.
The Arlene Butz Collection contains material from her Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing tenure. General correspondence, course materials for the asthma project, nursing therapeutics of AIDS, grant materials for the home nursing intervention for drug exposed infants project, reprints and brochures are included in the collection.
