Esther King was born in Pleasantview, Virginia. She received her nursing diploma from the Johns Hopkins Hospital Training School for Nurses in 1932. She was active as a private duty nurse before being appointed assistant director of nursing service in the Marburg wing of Johns Hopkins Hospital. She held this position from 1953 to 1973.
