Biography
Alice Elizabeth Henderson was born in Boston, Massachusetts. She received her nursing diploma in 1907 from the Johns Hopkins Hospital Training School for Nurses. She received a scholarship award for excellence her freshman year. She held several positions at Johns Hopkins Hospital from 1907 to 1911, including head nurse and night superintendent. In 1914 she became a chief nurse with the Maryland Red Cross Unit that was on the first Red Cross relief ship sent to Europe, the Mercy Ship. She served on the staff of the American Red Cross Hospital at Pau, France in 1915. For this work and her service with the American Fund for the French Wounded she was decorated by the French government. She spent the remainder of her life in Woodstock, New York, where she assisted in Civilian Defense during World War II.
