Biography
Helen Conkling Bartlett was born in Baltimore, Maryland. She received her nursing diploma from the Johns Hopkins Hospital Training School for Nurses in 1894. She served as night head nurse in 1895 and night superintendent in 1897 for the Johns Hopkins Hopsital. In 1897 she received a diploma from the Orthopedic School of Massage in Philadelphia. She was the Instructor of Massage at the Johns Hopkins Hospital Training School for Nurses from 1898 to 1916. She was a member of the Publications Committee for the Johns Hopkins Nurses Alumnae Association and contributed to the first issue of the Johns Hopkins Nurses Alumnae Magazine. She served as the Alumnae Association President from 1906 to 1907. She became a member of the Maryland State Board of Examiners of Nurses in 1911 and was its President from 1913 to 1938. During her tenure she successfully campaigned for mandatory nurses registration in the state of Maryland. In 1928 she wrote a history of the Maryland State Board of Examiners of Nurses and of the Maryland Nurses Association for its 25th anniversary.
