Redett, a chief of plastic and reconstructive surgery at Johns Hopkins, was born in Baltimore. He received a B.S. in Biology and Psychology from Emory University in 1987. From 1981 to 1991, Redett served as a Peace Corps fisheries volunteer in the Central African Republic, working on sustainable aquaculture and community development. He received his M.D. from the Dartmouth Medical School (now the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth) in 1995. Redett completed an internship in general surgery at The Johns Hopkins Hospital in 1996, and a general surgery residency at Johns Hopkins in 2000. In 2002, he completed a combined residency in surgery and plastic and reconstructive surgery through the Johns Hopkins Hospital/University of Maryland Combined Plastic Surgery Residency program. Redett moved to Toronto in 2002 for a fellowship in pediatric plastic surgery at the Hospital for Sick Children, which he completed in 2003.
Redett returned to Baltimore in 2003, when he was appointed assistant professor of plastic and reconstructive surgery at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, a role he maintained until 2009, when he was promoted to associate professor. He was named the director of the department of plastic and reconstructive surgery in 2019 and under his leadership the department expanded its research portfolio, strengthened multidisciplinary clinical programs, enhanced its residency and fellowship programs and further developed clinical and research collaborations with other Hopkins departments.
He also served as director of the Johns Hopkins Pediatric Burn Unit from 2003 to 2008, and of the Kernan Hospital Cleft Lip and Palate Center from 2003 to 2014. From 2013 to 2015, Redett served as program director for the Johns Hopkins Craniofacial Fellowship at the school of medicine. Redett also serves as Vice Dean for Clinical Affairs for the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and as president of the Clinical Practice Association (CPA), the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine faculty practice. He is chair of the board of the Johns Hopkins Clinical Alliance and co-chair of the Perioperative Playbook Committee. Redett is also a past residency program director for the Johns Hopkins/University of Maryland integrated plastic surgery residency program.
Redett and his team have performed innovative surgical procedures including complex genital reconstruction in children with exstrophy and genital transplantation in adults with traumatic defects. In 2018, Redett led a multidisciplinary team that performed the most extensive urogenital and abdominal wall transplant in the United States, helping a U.S. military veteran injured in Afghanistan.
Redett is a member of numerous plastic and reconstructive surgery societies including the American Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Association, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the American Society of Reconstructive Microsurgeons, and the Plastic Surgery Research Council. He is also a fellow in the American Academy of Pediatrics and American College of Surgeons. From 2006 to 2008, Redett served on the ethics committee of the American Burn Association, and has served on the ethics committee of the American Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Association since 2014. He has led many teaching medical missions to Central and South America and Africa. Redett serves on the Board of ReSurge International, a 501 (c) (3) not-for-profit organization which provides reconstructive surgical care for poor children and adults who lack access and builds-surgical capacity in developing countries.
Redett has received various awards and recognitions for his teaching and research in the fields of plastic and reconstructive surgery, including the CERT Research Scholarship in 1991, the John Staige Davis Plastic Surgery Society Resident Research Award, and the EKO Club International Mark of Excellence Award. He is a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society and the Miller Coulson Academy of Clinical Excellence.
Redett has more than 200 publications on clinical practice, research, and surgical innovations. He serves as a peer reviewer for Annals of Plastic Surgery, Pediatrics, Journal of Urology, Cleft Palate Craniofacial Journal, Journal of Burns and Wounds, Dermatologic Surgery, Craniomaxillofacial Trauma Reconstruction, and Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.
