Harold Edward Fox

Fox, a chairman of the department of gynecology and obstetrics, was born in East Orange, New Jersey. He earned his B.A. in 1967 and his M.D. and M.Sc. in 1972, all from the University of Rochester. Fox completed his internship and residency at the University of Rochester Strong Memorial Hospital in 1975. He also did medical research for a year at Oxford University. He completed a fellowship in maternal fetal medicine in 1977 through both the University of Rochester and the University of Southern California.

Fox served on the faculty at the University of Rochester before moving in 1979 to Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and The Presbyterian Hospital. In 1984, he became director of obstetrics and also directed the AIDS program in the department of obstetrics and gynecology. In 1995, Fox was named the Oscar I. and Mildred S. Dodek Professor in the department of obstetrics and gynecology at the George Washington University Medical College and moved to Washington, D.C.  One year later, Johns Hopkins recruited Fox to be the Dr. Dorothy Edwards Professor and the head of the department of gynecology and obstetrics, positions he held until 2013. During his tenure as chairman, Fox oversaw the growth of the department’s divisions including the female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery division, the division of gynecologic specialties, and the Howard A. Kelly Gynecologic Oncology Service.  

Fox is an expert on fetal health, particularly for mothers with HIV and high-risk obstetrical patients. He has actively participated in the maternal-fetal medicine division which provides not only superb maternal-fetal medicine but intrauterine diagnostic and interventive care along with in-depth, cutting edge investigations into the relationship between genetics and the practice of high-risk obstetrics. Fox has published nearly 100 peer reviewed scientific papers, and has served as editor of the Johns Hopkins resident handbook in gynecology and obstetrics. In addition, Fox has served on the editorial board for Pediatric AIDS and HIV Infections. He received the distinguished service award from the Sloane Hospital for Women at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1995, and the National Teaching Award from the Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics in 2000.
