David William Eisele

Eisele, the seventh director of otolaryngology-head and neck surgery, was born in Watertown, Wisconsin and grew up in Clearwater, Florida. He earned his A.B. from Dartmouth College in 1978 and received his M.D. from the Cornell University Medical College in 1982. Eisele completed an internship and second year of residency in general surgery in 1984, at the University of Washington. He completed a residency in otolaryngology-head and neck surgery at the University of Washington in 1988.
In 1988, Eisele was appointed assistant professor of otolaryngology-head and neck surgery at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. In 1993, he was promoted to associate professor of otolaryngology-head and neck surgery and also named an associate professor of oncology. Eisele was appointed associate professor of anesthesiology and critical care medicine in 1994. In 1999, Eisele was promoted to professor in all three departments. In 2001, Eisele left Johns Hopkins for the chairmanship of the department of otolaryngology-head and neck surgery at the University of California, San Francisco. He held this position until 2012 when he returned to Johns Hopkins as Andelot Professor and Director of the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery.
Eisele specializes in treating malignant and benign tumors of the head and neck with special interest in the salivary glands and the oral cavity. His research interests include head and neck cancer, functional stimulation for sleep apnea, and minimally invasive head and neck surgery.
During his career, Eisele has published over 300 peer-reviewed journal articles and over sixty book chapters. He has been a member of several professional organizations including the American Board of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, the American College of Surgeons, the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, the Triological Society, the American Head and Neck Society, and the American Laryngological Association. Eisele has also won awards including the George Nager Resident Teaching Award, the Francis Sooy Award for Clinical Excellence, and a Presidential Citation from the American Head and Neck Society.
