JAMA Reviews
Archives Online Conference
The Journal
of the American Medical Association takes an in-depth
look at the Alan Mason Chesney Medical Archives' cyberconference
on psychobiologist, Curt Richter, in an article entitled,
Cyberconference Helps Archivists Manage Trove of Scientific
Papers.
In the December
25th, 1996 issue of JAMA, (in the Medical News &
Perspective section) writer, Lynne Lamberg examines the
contributions of psychobiologist, Curt Richter, M.D.; and
the archives efforts to use the World Wide Web to query the
scientific and archival communities for input in determining
the future of the voluminous collection of laboratory data
Richter left behind. (See our July 1996 news note below, for
more information.)
The Archives
Launches an International Conference
on the World Wide Web (1996)
This conference, cosponsored
with the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences
pays tribute to Curt P. Richter (1894 -1988) a pioneer in
the field of psychobiology, who developed various subdisciplines,
including chronobiology and ingestive behavior studies. Dr.
Richter's legacy includes a vast body of data from nearly
six decades of research. The purpose of this conference is
to explore how the research data that Curt P. Richter collected
throughout his career at Johns Hopkins may be preserved and
utilized in ongoing teaching and research activities. By using
the example of Richter's data as a case study, we hope to
stimulate interest in ways primary data from other research
laboratories may be recycled for future use in teaching and
research.
The conference
invites scientists from Richter's fields of investigation
along with social scientists, historians, archivists, and
librarians to discuss and debate the value of this research
data as a resource for future scientific investigations.
