Biography John C. Hume was born in Brooklyn, New York. He received his B.A. in 1932 from Princeton University and his M.D. in 1936 from Vanderbilt University. He obtained his M.P.H. in 1947 and his Dr.P.H. in 1951, both from the Johns Hopkins University School of Hygiene and Public Health. Hume came to Johns Hopkins in 1947 after serving in several administrative and medical positions. He joined the faculties of the school of medicine and the school of hygiene and public health, where he also served as an assistant director. In addition, he was chief of the venereal disease clinic at the Johns Hopkins Hospital. Hume left Johns Hopkins in 1955 to serve as chief of the Health Division of the Technical Cooperation Mission in New Delhi, India. He returned to the school of hygiene and public health in 1961 as associate dean and became dean in 1967. |

Scope and Content The John C. Hume Collection covers his years on the faculties of the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions. Series include correspondence, notes, course material, manuscripts, reprints, photographs, files on associations, and subject files. There is course material on sexually transmitted diseases and notes on tuberculosis and yaws. Additional Hume material can be found in the records of the office of the dean, school of hygiene and public health, as well as in the school of hygiene and public health subject files.
