Biography

Louis P. Hamburger was born in Baltimore. He received his A.B. from the Johns Hopkins University in 1893 and his M.D. from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1897. Hamburger was the first student to enroll at the School of Medicine and graduated in the first class. He was a member of the medical faculty from 1899 until 1948, when he was made assistant professor emeritus. Hamburger was also in private practice for more than 50 years. 

Scope and Content

The Louis P. Hamburger Collection spans his studies and medical career at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Materials include correspondence, student notes, and manuscripts. A series of subject files contains notes and letters pertaining to Hamburger's research into various diseases. A significant interest was the study of minor ailments such as headache, influenza, cold, cough, sore throat, and diarrhea. Hamburger's papers pertaining to more serious illnesses include those on angina, tonsilitis, migraines, and pulmonary tuberculosis.
