A Brief History
of the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions
In 1867, Johns Hopkins, a wealthy Baltimore merchant, incorporated
the Johns Hopkins University and the Johns Hopkins Hospital, willing
these institutions the bulk of his fortune. Upon his death in 1873
and the probation of his will, Mr. Hopkins’ trustees chose Daniel
Coit Gilman as president of the proposed University and Hospital. The
University, which was conceived primarily as an institution for research
and advanced studies, formally opened in 1876. Nearly a decade later
in 1883, the trustees moved to establish the Medical Faculty. The Hospital
and School of Nursing began operations in 1889 and the School of Medicine,
from the beginning closely linked with the Hospital, opened in 1893.
With the advent of the twentieth century the University expanded and
new divisions were added.
