Boxes 32 - 54 An Overview of the Building Photographs

The collection of building photographs contain approximately 2,500 photos of the exteriors and interiors of about 70 buildings comprising the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions. Included are photographs of the buildings of the East Baltimore campus that are standing and most of the buildings that have been razed. The building photos include scenes of the grounds, and there also some photos of the community surrounding the medical institutions. The images in this collection are focused primarily on the physical structures and are mostly devoid of people. (Photos of people in buildings are found elsewhere in the collection. For example, a photo of the Octagon Ward, which includes nurses caring for patients, can be found with the Clinical Medicine photos.) Of particular interest is this collection is a series of photos taken in 1889 by Frederick Gutekunst of Philadelphia and the James S. Cummins Studio of Baltimore.

PHOTOS OF BUILDINGS

Box 37 MEDICAL COMPLEX - AERIAL VIEWS - OVERSIZE

1) Circa 1922 -1924 From the west.

In the foreground the Service Building emits a plume of steam; the Power Plant is yet to be built. The northern corner of the School of Hygiene lot has been cleared.

2) October 1, 1924. From the southwest.

The School of Hygiene is under construction, the Power Plant is being built, the lot where the Welch Library will be built has some activity on it. The Women's Clinic has opened, the Pathology Building, replacing the building destroyed by fire, has been completed. The Carnegie Dispensary Building has not yet been constructed.

3) Circa 1932. From the southwest.

The Halsted and Osler Buildings have just been completed. The School of Hygiene was erected in 1924-1926, the Carnegie Dispensary Building was erected in 1926-1927 and the Welch Library from 1927-1928. the Service Building has been enlarged and is identified as being the kitchen. A small bit of open space on the north side of the School of Hygiene was put to use as a pasture for sheep. (Their cells utilized for serology tests.) The Sinai Hospital has also grown.(The hand labeled key to this photo seems to have been revised over time, and the numbers do not in all cases correspond to the photo.)

4) Circa 1938. From the southwest.

This aerial view appeared in the The Sunday Sun. Little change is detected from the photo of 1932. The period of accellerated growth of the 1920’s which launched the building boom had ended. For several consecutive years during the 1930’s the school had financial difficulties and, therefore was not able to undertake new building activities.

5) Circa 1953-54. From the southwest.

The Blalock Building is now completed. Lots have been cleared in the foreground for the Broadway Garden Apartments known as "The Compound".

6) Circa 1959 View A. From the east.

The Dome is undergoing renovation and planking is visible around its base; the tennis courts, the original site of the Turtle Derby are also visible. The Mary Garrett Room can be seen to the right of the Annex Building which is attached to the rear of the Administration Building. Each were connected by the Main Corridor; the corridor roofs were known as, the "Bridge." The Octagon Ward (later known as the Thayer Building) can be seen to the right of the Garrett Room. It was built at John Shaw Billings suggestion to optimize exposure to sunlight, and to provide the most even distribution of heat and effective ventilation.

7) Circa 1959 View B. From the northeast

The W. Barry Wood Basic Science Building has been completed and the Old Physiology Building has been razed to make way for the Biophysics Building. The Power Plant can be seen prior to expansion. The Sinai Hospital complex is visible on the right.

8) Circa 1959 View C. circa From the southeast.

The newly built Broadway Garden Apartments known as "The Compound" are seen in the foreground just above the old Dunbar High School. The first section of Reed Hall is on the far side of the tennis courts. To the right of Reed Hall, preparation for the 550 Building has begun, and construction of The Johns Hopkins Inn is in progress.

9) 1963 From the southwest.

The Thayer Building has been razed and the Children’s Medical and Surgical Center (first occupied in 1963) has risen in its place. To the north, the site for the Kennedy Institute for Handicapped Children has been cleared. The north wing of the School of Hygiene building has just been completed, and the Wilmer-Woods Building is nearing completion. The Harriet Lane Home still remains, and also the Main Nurses Residence. The Gatehouse marking the main entrance to the Hospital has been razed and the foot path leading to the main entrance of the Hospital has been divided.

10) Circa 1976  (3 views) A. From the west. B. From northwest. C. From southeast.

The Harriet Lane Home and the Nurses Home were razed in 1974, making way for the construction of the Oncology Center and the Radiation Therapy Building. The Nelson Tower is also under construction.

11) Circa 1997 Police helicopter view from the southwest. (Courtesy of Victor A. McKusick)

This photo documents another expansive period of growth for the Medical Institutions. The Heyssel Outpatient Center is now completed, as are the enlarged Kennedy-Krieger Center and the Turner, Traylor and Ross Buildings which are visible to the north. On the eastern horizon, the School of Nursing on Wolfe Street is nearing completion, and in the foreground construction is underway for the new Weinberg Clinical Oncology Center.

These are oversized and not in regular folders, consequently they are unnumbered.
