This collection of photograph albums contains significant historical evidence of the history of research, teaching and patient care at The Johns Hopkins Hospital and The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. The years documenting the mid and early twentieth century are especially valuable in terms of images featuring faculty, staff, and students at work; at the bedside, on rounds, in the office, in the operating room, and conducting research in the laboratory. The images also provide evidence of nursing activities and patient care. In addition there are albums including class photos, departmental photographs, and special subject presentation albums given to individuals at the medical institutions. In addition to this collection of albums, other albums of a more personal nature, or relating more to one individual, are generally found within the archives personal paper collections.

Box 149  Photograph Albums, "Johns Hopkins Hospital 1902-1903"

Five albums

These small, leather-bound photograph albums contains an excellent overview of The Johns Hopkins Hospital and School of Medicine at the beginning of the twentieth century. The albums, stamped, "J. H. H. 1902-1903" in gold on the cover, each contain approximately fifty black and white photographs. The images feature faculty, staff, and students at work; at the bedside, on rounds, in the office, in the operating room, and conducting research in the laboratory. The images also provide evidence of nursing activities and patient care. The images (about 2 3/4 inches by 3 3/4 inches) are tipped-in, one per page, and are mounted on light gray paper. The subjects include both formal, and informal, and individual and group portraits. Most of the content in each of the albums is duplicative, but there are also images which may be unique within individual albums. The 1902-03 series of albums contain the manufacture's name, Ward's Album. Some of the albums contain hand written captions and identifications.  The archives collection includes albums that were previously owned by:  Helen H. Crawford, Richard H. Follis, Joseph K. Hoffman, Louise Taylor Jones, and Amy E. McMahon. Two of the albums bear monograms, the first, "R.I.C.", probably belonged to Rufus Ivory Cole, another is stamped "W.H.W.", and presumably belonged to William H. Welch.

Dalton Welty album - 1939

This series of images is much the same as the other three, in this box, but it also contains small group photos of the Class of 1939 (2nd year).

Nesbitt Collection - John Nesbitt (School of Medicine Class of 1940) and Eugenia McClung (SON '38) Nesbitt

This collection of photos was not in an album, but they basically duplicate the series of photos in the Shulman, Welby, and Zeiler albums. However, each of the above named collections appear to have a few unique images, not found in the others.
