About Mr. Johns Hopkins (1795 - 1873), Benefactor and Namesake.

The Origins and Development of the Medical Institutions.

The Johns Hopkins Hospital and the major health divisionsof The Johns Hopkins University opened at different times over a span of nearly three decades (1889 - 1918). The delays were largely due to financial shortages and the need to raise additional funds. The opening dates of the various health institutions are as follows:



The Johns Hopkins Hospital (1889)
The Johns Hopkins Hospital School of Nursing (1889)
The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine (1893)
The Johns Hopkins University School of Hygiene and Public Health (1918)

After nearly seventy-five years of operation as a diplomaprogram, The Johns Hopkins Hospital School of Nursing closed(1973). Nine years later (1982), The Johns Hopkins UniversitySchool of Nursing opened with an offering of both undergraduateand graduate degree programs.
